Rajkot, August 21: Gujarat’s Health Minister, Prabhull Panseriya, assured swift justice and complete safety for a female doctor following an alleged assault at Rajkot Civil Hospital. He emphasized that the state government is treating the incident with utmost seriousness.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening in the emergency ward of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Civil Hospital. According to reports, a 26-year-old resident doctor was verbally abused, slapped, and threatened by a male colleague over a dispute regarding the admission of a critically ill patient.
The doctor, identified as Krishna Singhal, has been working as a first-year resident in the medical department for nearly six months. She was on a 24-hour emergency duty when an elderly patient was brought to the hospital in serious condition around 7:30 PM.
The confrontation arose due to disagreements over the patient’s admission. Local sources indicated that the incident sparked outrage among junior doctors, leading to protests at the hospital that continued late into the night.
The protests subsided after a complaint was filed against Ashwin Ramani at the Pradyumnanagar police station, allowing the resident doctors to resume their duties. On Friday, police took action by detaining Ramani in connection with the complaint.
In response to the incident, Panseriya stated that he spoke with the victim doctor over the phone, assuring her that immediate justice and full protection would be provided by Friday evening. He reiterated that the state government is taking the incident of abuse against a female doctor at Rajkot Civil Hospital very seriously.
Panseriya also affirmed that the dignity and respect of female employees and doctors will not be compromised. He stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of such misconduct.
This incident comes amid renewed scrutiny of the treatment and conduct towards junior doctors in Gujarat’s government hospitals.
