New Delhi, March 21: In light of escalating crises in West Asia and disruptions in global supply chains, the government has recommended urban gas distribution (CGD) companies to prioritize providing PNG connections to commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and canteens.
CGD companies, including IGL, MGL, GAIL, and BPCL, are currently offering incentive amounts. The PNG Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has directed these companies to expedite the application process and reduce the timeline between application submission and the commencement of gas supply to consumers’ homes.
Additionally, the government has urged states and union territories to accelerate the approval process for CGD expansion. Meanwhile, the central government has proposed an additional 10 percent allocation of commercial LPG to all states and union territories, contingent on their ability to support the transition from LPG to PNG in the long term.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum, it is now the responsibility of states and union territories to advance this reform, ensuring the expansion of the CGD network and expediting the issuance of connections to both domestic and commercial/industrial PNG consumers.
Recently, over 13,700 new PNG connections have been issued, with more than 7,300 consumers transitioning from LPG to PNG, thereby alleviating some pressure on LPG demand.
However, given the current geopolitical situation, concerns regarding LPG supply remain. Nevertheless, there has been no reduction in supply from distributors. Notably, there has been a significant decrease in panic bookings, dropping from 8.9 million on March 13 to approximately 5.5 million on March 20, while the supply of domestic LPG continues as usual.
Around 18 states and union territories have issued orders for the allocation of non-domestic LPG, ensuring availability across all regions. Educational institutions and hospitals are being prioritized, receiving nearly 50 percent of commercial LPG allocations.
The government reported that approximately 11,360 metric tons of commercial LPG were supplied last week. Priority sectors will continue to receive secure supplies, including 100 percent supply for domestic LPG and CNG transport.
