FIR Filed After Apple Trees Cut Down in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, April 21: Police in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, reported on Tuesday that an FIR has been filed against miscreants for cutting down apple trees in an orchard.

Authorities stated that dozens of apple trees were felled by unidentified individuals in a garden located in the Bohri Pora area of Sopore, Baramulla district. The destruction of these trees has caused significant financial loss to the orchard owner.

The owner’s family revealed that the incident occurred at night when the vandals entered the orchard and cut down several apple trees, including many high-quality varieties.

Kalbi Hussain Mir, the orchard owner, reported that approximately 55 trees were destroyed. He described the act as deliberate, emphasizing that the orchard is the family’s primary source of income.

Mir estimated their losses to be between 500,000 to 800,000 rupees. These were premium apple trees, and they had expected to harvest around 800 to 900 boxes of apples this season. The family is demanding strict action and has urged the police to identify the culprits.

Mir expressed his belief that the act seemed intentional, indicating that someone wanted to harm them.

A police officer confirmed that an FIR has been registered, and further investigations are underway.

Due to the income generated from apple orchards, the Sopore area has historically been referred to as ‘Little London’ in Kashmir.

Despite urbanization, much of the Sopore sub-district remains covered with apple orchards, which are vital for the livelihoods of hundreds of families dependent on horticulture.

Horticulture is the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, contributing over 120 billion rupees annually and providing employment to around 3.3 million people. More than 700,000 families are directly or indirectly connected to this sector.
