Female tourist and her paraglider guide drowns in Lachung river in Sikkim

Darjeeling, April 2 : A 23-year-old tourist from Hyderabad, identified as Esha Reddy Sankepalli, and her paraglider guide Sandeep Gurung ( 26)were killed after they fell into the icy turbulent Lachung river in north Sikkim, police said on Saturday.The accident took place on Friday when the paraglider and Esha got tangled with a wire while flying and fell into the Lachung riverand were swept away by the icy waters. The bodies of the two were retrieved later with the help of a JCB escalator vehicle, they said.” At 1020 hours paraglider Sandeep Gurung, a resident of Thami Dara, Ranka (east Sikkim) with tourist (Esha Reddy Sankepalli,) r/o Khammam, Hyderabad , Telangana, who took off their flight at around 0930 hours from Lachung View point accidentally gottangled with a wire at Phaka, Lachung, thereby losing their balance and fell into the Lachung River, ” the comm que from the Sikkim Police said. ” The duo thereafter were swept away by the river and subsequently their bodies got stuck under the boulders. Rescue operation was beingconducted by the local police, locals, army and ITBP personnel,” it added.
