New Delhi, August 25: Global logistics giant FedEx has announced plans to enhance its presence in India by developing an integrated air cargo hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The company will invest approximately $150 million (around ₹1,250 crores) in this project. The new hub will be established in GMR Cargo City at Delhi Airport, aimed at facilitating faster, safer, and more efficient movement of goods from northern and eastern India to international markets.
During an interview with a news agency, Kami Vishwanathan, President of FedEx for the Indian subcontinent, Middle East, and Africa, stated that the company is investing $115 million in the long-term development of this new air hub.
“This hub will connect India’s northern and eastern markets to global markets. Our international gateway services and pickup-and-delivery operations will be streamlined at one location, enhancing operational efficiency and capacity,” Vishwanathan explained.
He further noted that the hub will utilize cutting-edge automation technology, including automated sorting systems and high-speed X-ray screening facilities. This will significantly expedite the processing of shipments coming to and from India.
Vishwanathan expressed optimism about India’s commercial future. He highlighted that over the past two years, FedEx has invested in additional capacity for routes from India to the U.S. and Europe, strengthened trade routes from Asia to India, and made substantial infrastructure investments in Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai, and now Delhi.
“India is playing an increasingly vital role in global trade. Global companies are viewing India as an alternative supply source in high-tech sectors such as healthcare, electronics, and semiconductors. This new hub will support export growth,” he added.
FedEx is also leveraging its expertise and global network to help small and medium exporters access international markets, thereby giving local products a global identity.
According to the company, the new air cargo hub will span approximately 230,000 square feet and will be fully automated. Once operational, the package processing capacity will increase from the current 600 packages per hour to 5,000 packages per hour.
FedEx anticipates significant expansion potential in the future due to rising demand. The hub will feature state-of-the-art X-ray machines, advanced security systems, intelligent package handling technology, and modern auto-sorters.
The company believes these facilities will further strengthen the logistics network, speed up shipment processing, and enhance customer service.
Additionally, FedEx is collaborating with the Indian government’s ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative, which aims to help promote over 200 products from approximately 750 districts to international markets.
The proposed FedEx hub will be part of GMR Cargo City, an integrated cargo and logistics center being developed at Delhi Airport, covering an area of about 50 acres with a total development potential of 1.5 to 2 million square feet.
