
Pune, April 22: A shocking incident has emerged from Pune, Maharashtra, where a fake ISRO scientist was arrested for defrauding a woman of ₹26.5 lakhs through an online matrimonial site. The accused exploited the trust built through this platform to carry out the scam.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Aadarsh Prashant Mhatre, had also used various aliases including Swapnil Warule, Hemant Gaykar, and Jayesh Patil. He created a fraudulent profile claiming to be an ISRO scientist while residing in areas like Alibag, Turbhe, and Rasayani.
Mhatre contacted the woman with a marriage proposal, assuring her that he would take full responsibility for her daughter’s education. By building this emotional connection, he gained her trust and gradually entangled her in financial transactions, ultimately leading to the scam of ₹26.5 lakhs.
Following the incident, a case was registered at the Yerwada police station. Given the seriousness of the situation, the police expedited their investigation. During the probe, it was discovered that the accused was already arrested in another case at the Rabale police station in Navi Mumbai. He was subsequently arrested in this case on April 15 after completing legal procedures.
In a positive development, police managed to recover approximately ₹21 lakhs from the accused’s bank account. The successful operation was carried out under the guidance of senior officials and led by Police Inspector (Crime) Vijay Thakur, highlighting the dedication of the Yerwada police station’s officers and staff.
