New Delhi, April 9: European nations have criticized the recent Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described these actions as an “insult” to ceasefire rules, while British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper labeled them as entirely wrong.
EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, advised Hezbollah to disarm and deemed the Israeli actions unnecessary. She stated that the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran should also apply to Lebanon. Kallas emphasized that the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah must surrender its weapons.
In a post, she remarked, “Hezbollah has dragged Lebanon into war, but such devastating actions cannot be justified as Israel’s right to self-defense.” She noted that this situation puts significant pressure on the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, which should extend to Lebanon as well.
Kallas questioned Israel’s claims of “self-defense,” stating, “Hundreds were killed in Israeli attacks on Wednesday night, making it difficult to argue that such severe actions fall within the scope of ‘self-defense’.”
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot deemed the attacks on Lebanon unacceptable, asserting that they weaken the temporary ceasefire established between the U.S. and Iran.
Yvette Cooper, the British Foreign Secretary, also found the Israeli strikes unjustifiable and called for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire discussions.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated that Israel has disrespected the two-week ceasefire rules. She highlighted the dire situation, stating it has reached a “no point of return.” Nonetheless, she stressed the need to actively pursue any remaining peace prospects and condemned any violations of ceasefire rules in her address to the Italian Parliament.
