New Delhi, May 18: Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid and a Member of Parliament from Baramulla, has received significant relief from the Delhi High Court. The court has granted him interim bail to attend his father’s funeral, allowing him to be released until June 2.
Engineer Rashid’s father, Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, passed away on Sunday night. The 85-year-old had been hospitalized at AIIMS for the past month due to ongoing treatment.
Previously, the Delhi High Court had also granted him temporary custody parole from May 5 to May 10, allowing him to visit his father at the hospital during specified hours. Following his father’s death, the court has now permitted him to attend the funeral.
In the wake of this tragedy, the main spokesperson for the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), Inam Un Nabi, made an emotional appeal to the Indian government and relevant authorities. He urged them to ensure Engineer Rashid’s immediate release so that he could participate in his father’s final rites and prayers. He emphasized that no sorrow is greater for a son than being unable to bid farewell to his father. In such moments of personal tragedy, human emotions should take precedence over political differences.
It is noteworthy that Engineer Rashid has been incarcerated since 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, following his arrest by the NIA in connection with a terrorist funding case. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Omar Abdullah from the Baramulla seat by over 200,000 votes.
