Dhamtari, August 23: The central government is implementing various schemes aimed at empowering women, enabling them to achieve financial independence. Women across the country are benefiting from these initiatives.
In Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, women from the self-help group in Amali village have set an example by generating income from what is often considered a weed. Azolla, a plant that grows in ponds, has been transformed into a source of self-reliance by the women of the NRLM-affiliated Bihan self-help group.
Anita Bai Markam, an agricultural worker, received training from the veterinary department and started cultivating Azolla in tanks at her home. Through scientific methods and regular care, she has successfully produced 25 kilograms of Azolla.
The group utilizes Azolla as an organic supplement in rice farming, enhancing soil fertility and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. Additionally, it serves as nutritious feed for livestock, fish farming, and poultry, thereby lowering production costs.
Looking ahead, the group plans to produce organic fertilizers and vermicompost. Anita Bai shared that initially, they had little knowledge about Azolla, but it has now become a valuable resource for her family, fellow group members, and local farmers. The women are using it not only to feed their livestock but also in their farming practices, gaining both economic benefits and confidence in adopting sustainable agriculture. They expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for these opportunities.
Anita, working as an agricultural friend, highlighted that feeding Azolla to dairy animals increases milk production. It is given to cows, goats, and poultry, resulting in significant income. She emphasized that she supports her family through Azolla cultivation and is thankful to PM Modi for creating employment opportunities for women.
Kaushalya Sahu mentioned that she cultivated 200 grams of Azolla, which yielded three tanks and generated sales of 9,000 rupees.
Dhamtari Collector Avinash Mishra noted that women are making a name for themselves as “Lakhpati Didis” through natural farming. Both central and state governments are promoting organic farming over chemical methods, with Azolla proving effective as organic fertilizer. Through Azolla cultivation, women are becoming financially successful.
