Kolkata, April 27: The Election Commission has directed the arrest of all individuals involved in a violent clash between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the Jagaddal area of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Several people were injured during the incident.
The clash occurred around 11 PM on Sunday night, coinciding with an explosion. Among the injured was a member of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The Election Commission has requested a report from the police regarding the incident.
On the same night, BJP candidate Arjun Singh, a former MP from the Barrackpore constituency, visited the local Jagaddal police station to file a First Information Report (FIR). At that time, over 200 TMC supporters had gathered outside the police station, leading to a heated exchange and ultimately a violent confrontation between the two groups.
Both firearms and homemade bombs were reportedly used during the clash, resulting in injuries to the CAPF personnel. To manage the situation, a large joint team from the CAPF and Barrackpore Police Commissionerate was deployed to the scene.
So far, four individuals have been arrested, including Kaushik Das, Sikandar Prasad, Gopal Raut, and Shyamdev Shaw. Some other suspects involved in the clash are still at large. The Election Commission has instructed the police to locate and apprehend these individuals immediately. Additionally, the Commission has ordered state police and CAPF to conduct ongoing patrols in the area.
The second phase of voting for 142 assembly seats across six districts, including North 24 Parganas and the state capital Kolkata, is scheduled for April 29. The results will be announced on May 4. The Commission has implemented unprecedented security measures for the voting day, significantly more extensive than those for the first phase held on April 23.
