El Niños Impact on Farmers: Telangana BJP Leader Calls for Government Action

Hyderabad, July 19: N. Ramachandra Rao, the Telangana BJP state president, has urged the state government to take decisive action regarding the challenges farmers face due to the effects of El Niño. He highlighted that changes in weather patterns and water shortages are causing significant losses for farmers, making it difficult for them to decide which crops to cultivate.

Rao emphasized that the El Niño phenomenon has severely affected farmers’ conditions. With reduced availability of water for irrigation, farmers are increasingly worried. He appealed to the government to go beyond merely forming committees and to implement effective measures on the ground to address farmers’ issues.

He suggested that if the government establishes committees, they should also propose new sources of water for farmers. Special attention is needed for northern Telangana regions, where some reservoirs and other water sources exist. Better utilization of these resources could provide relief to farmers regarding irrigation.

The BJP state president also mentioned areas in southern Telangana, noting the presence of significant water sources like the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. The government should prioritize both northern and southern farmers equally to prevent any farmer from suffering losses due to water scarcity.

Rao pointed out that rice and cotton are the two primary crops in Telangana, and farmers have long relied heavily on them. However, weather-related changes like El Niño could impact these crops. Therefore, the government should educate and train farmers to diversify into other crops.

He stated that promoting crop diversification could help shield farmers from the adverse effects of changing weather. The government should conduct awareness campaigns among farmers to inform them about crops that require less water and can yield better results in fluctuating climatic conditions.
