Egypt and Qatar Urge the US and Iran to Show Responsibility and Wisdom

Cairo, May 10: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani have called on the United States and Iran to act with “responsibility” and “wisdom” during this sensitive time.

On Saturday, the two leaders held a phone conversation. They emphasized the necessity of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes. They also stressed the importance of supporting the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran, as reported by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.

According to Xinhua news agency, both leaders discussed the current status of talks between Washington and Tehran. They asserted that prioritizing a political solution is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the region, protecting the resources and interests of its people.

On February 28, Israel and the US conducted attacks on Iran. This was followed by a ceasefire on April 8. Subsequently, lengthy peace talks took place in Pakistan, but no substantial agreement was reached.

Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions have escalated recently around the Strait of Hormuz. The US has targeted Iranian vessels and coastal areas, while Iran has retaliated against US warships with missiles and drones.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy announced on Friday that the Iranian military conducted a large-scale joint military operation, employing ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and explosive drones. They claimed these attacks targeted US warships.

Iran also stated that intelligence reports indicated significant damage to US vessels, leading to the withdrawal of three American warships from the Hormuz area.

However, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces thwarted “unprovoked attacks” from Iran and responded in self-defense. According to CENTCOM, the US does not seek to escalate tensions but is fully prepared to ensure the safety of its forces.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that no damage was inflicted on the three American warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
