New Delhi, April 29: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Somarriba will be visiting India from April 29 to May 1. Somarriba, who also serves as Ecuador’s Minister of Human Mobility, will engage in discussions with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday.
Following this, she will visit Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. That evening, she is scheduled to meet with Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita.
Last November, Margerita visited Ecuador and met with President Daniel Noboa. During that visit, both nations discussed enhancing cooperation and strengthening partnerships across various sectors.
Margerita also met with several Ecuadorian ministers, deputy ministers, and officials, discussing collaboration in agriculture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, training, education, culture, tourism, trade, textiles, health, and pharmaceuticals.
Additionally, she signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Foreign Minister Somarriba to foster cooperation between the diplomatic training institutes of both countries. Together, they inaugurated India’s new permanent embassy in Quito, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ecuador.
In December, Margerita met with Ecuador’s Ambassador to India, Fernando Buceli Vargas, to further discuss enhancing cooperation and working in areas of mutual interest.
India and Ecuador established diplomatic relations in 1969 and signed an agreement for foreign office consultations in 2000. According to the MEA, five rounds of talks have taken place between the two countries in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2023.
