New Delhi, March 5: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi on Thursday. The two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Following the conversation, Jaishankar took to social media platform X to share insights about their discussion on the current situation in the region.
Earlier, on March 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. During this call, he condemned violations of Oman’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while appreciating the support provided to the Indian community in Oman.
PM Modi noted that both leaders exchanged views on recent developments in the Middle East and agreed on the necessity of continuous diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
The Indian Embassy in Oman reported on March 2 that an Indian national lost their life in an attack on an oil tanker. The embassy is working with local authorities to ensure the safe and swift return of Indian nationals aboard the vessel.
According to Oman’s state news agency, the oil tanker, flagged under the Marshall Islands, was targeted by an unmanned surface vessel approximately 52 nautical miles off the coast of Oman.
The tanker was carrying around 59,463 metric tons of cargo. Following the attack, a fire and explosion occurred in the engine room, resulting in the death of one Indian crew member.
During the rescue operation, 21 crew members were safely evacuated, including 16 Indians, 4 Bangladeshis, and 1 Ukrainian. Additionally, a ship from the Royal Navy of Oman is monitoring the tanker’s situation and warning passing vessels.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28, aimed at weakening Iran’s missile capabilities and military infrastructure.
These attacks resulted in the deaths of several senior officials, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile strikes targeting U.S. bases, regional capitals, and allied forces, heightening tensions across the Middle East.
