New Delhi, May 5: Dr. Pranot Tudu of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured victory in the Binpur Assembly constituency of West Bengal. He won by a margin of 22,977 votes against TMC’s Birbaha Hansda.
Dr. Tudu received a total of 107,238 votes, while Hansda garnered 84,261 votes. In third place was CPI(M)’s Rabindranath Sardar, who received 5,619 votes. The Congress party finished fourth, with their candidate Golapi Saren obtaining 2,040 votes.
The contest between BJP and TMC was intense, but ultimately, BJP emerged victorious in this constituency. Voting for the first phase took place on April 23. In the 2021 Assembly elections, TMC had fielded Debnath Hansda, who received 100,277 votes, while BJP’s Palan Saren came in second with 60,783 votes. Both parties changed their candidates for this election.
Historically, the Binpur Assembly seat in Jhargram district was considered a stronghold for the Left. In recent years, it has experienced significant fluctuations. The constituency has a predominantly rural and tribal voter base.
Established in 1951, Binpur was a two-member constituency in its initial years. Congress and CPI were the first to win here. Since then, CPI(M) has won five times, CPI three times, Congress three times (last in 1967), the Regional Jharkhand Party four times, and TMC twice.
Notably, the recent elections added a new layer of uncertainty to the political landscape. Despite a low Muslim population, 13,182 names were officially removed from the voter list due to reasons like death, duplication, and migration. However, no details were publicly disclosed based on caste or community. Over the past decade, BJP has shown rapid growth in this area.
