Chennai, May 7: In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party announced its formal support for actor-politician Vijay’s party to form the government. This decision has sparked discontent among Congress’s ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). DMK treasurer T.R. Balu responded sharply to this move.
He stated that Congress’s stance reveals a side that has long been concealed. Balu emphasized that whenever Congress faced difficulties, the DMK has always acted as a strong ally, often paying a political price for its support, which Congress has consistently rejected.
Balu pointed out the long-standing close ties between the DMK and Congress leadership, particularly with former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He also mentioned that the party has maintained a familial-like relationship with Rahul Gandhi.
According to Balu, Rahul Gandhi has often referred to DMK chief M.K. Stalin as his brother. Reacting to recent signals of a shift in relations from Congress, Balu expressed that he was not surprised. He accused Congress of presenting the changing political stance of some legislators within the alliance as a strategic decision, while in reality, it is political opportunism.
Balu remarked that this move betrays the voters who had hoped for the formation of an alliance government. He noted that the BJP has faced accusations of backdoor politics to gain power in several states, and now Congress appears to be adopting a similar approach.
The DMK leader reiterated that his party has always supported Congress, both inside and outside Parliament, and has remained ideologically and emotionally aligned. In the 2019 general elections, the DMK played a crucial role in supporting Rahul Gandhi, leading to significant success for the alliance. Balu concluded that defeat and betrayal are not new to them, but time will reveal the truth.
