New Delhi, March 13: Yoga is an invaluable part of ancient Indian tradition, effectively balancing the body and mind. One of the simplest and most beneficial poses is the ‘Viparita Karani’, which, when practiced regularly, can reduce mental stress.
The term ‘Viparita Karani’ is derived from two Sanskrit words: ‘Viparita’, meaning ‘inverted’, and ‘Karani’, meaning ‘action’. As the name suggests, this pose involves an inverted body position. It is considered a gentle variation of ‘Sarvangasana’, where the legs are raised upwards. This yoga pose is extremely beneficial for physical health.
Commonly referred to as the ‘Legs Up the Wall Pose’, Ayurveda describes it as a remedy for reducing wrinkles. According to Ayurvedic principles, the ‘Viparita Karani’ pose is highly advantageous as it inverts the body. In this position, blood circulation from the lower limbs redirects towards the heart and brain. This not only stimulates digestion but also enhances facial glow.
Practicing this pose daily can help alleviate physical issues such as stress, insomnia, and swelling.
From a practice perspective, this pose is quite simple for beginners and can typically be held for 5 to 15 minutes. To perform it, sit against a wall and gradually lie back, placing your legs straight up against the wall. If you find it challenging to keep your legs elevated initially, you can place a blanket or pillow under your lower back for support, making it easier to maintain balance. Keep your head and shoulders on the ground, with your arms spread out to the sides or resting on your abdomen, palms facing up. Close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths. Remain in this position for as long as you feel comfortable.
You may experience some difficulty at first, but with regular practice, it will become easier. However, individuals with serious neck or back issues, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or those in the later stages of pregnancy should consult a yoga instructor or physician before attempting this pose.
