Dhanbad, 30 December. The danger from the poisonous gas leak in the KenduaDih police station area of Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, caused by closed coal mines, continues unabated. In this fire and subsidence-affected region, another person has died amid the ongoing leak of toxic gases like carbon monoxide.

The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Surendra Singh from Naya Dhaura. It is suspected that his death was caused by exposure to the poisonous gas, though the exact cause will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is released.

According to reports, Surendra Singh was sleeping in his room on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, his family found him unconscious and immediately took him to Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), where doctors declared him brought dead. Surendra Singh was a member of the Janata Mazdoor Sangh. His death has created a tense atmosphere in the area.

Earlier this month, two women died after being affected by the poisonous gas leak in the KenduaDih area. On 4 December, after gas escaped from the closed coal mine, Priyanka Devi and Lalita Devi lost their lives, while around 20 people fell ill and were admitted to hospitals. Residents had complained of eye irritation, difficulty in breathing, and anxiety during that time.

The gas leak severely impacted Rajput Basti, Masjid Mohalla, Officer Colony, and surrounding localities in KenduaDih, where nearly 10,000 people reside. As the situation worsened, many residents abandoned their homes and quarters to seek safer places. India Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) appealed to people through public announcements to vacate the area and set up temporary camps for affected families.

According to BCCL officials, the area has been declared fire-affected earlier, and a permanent solution requires complete evacuation of the locality. Despite this, locals allege that the measures taken to stop the gas leak are insufficient.

On receiving the news of Surendra Singh’s death, former Jharia MLA Sanjeev Singh visited SNMMCH to meet the family and express condolences. He strongly criticized the BCCL management, stating that the gas leak problem in KenduaDih has been ongoing for years but is being addressed only through paperwork. He blamed the negligence of management and administration for the loss of innocent lives. People are demanding safe rehabilitation, compensation, and effective control over the gas leak.
