Washington, May 13: Several senators from the Democratic Party have raised alarms that the Trump administration may be steering the U.S. towards another prolonged conflict in the Middle East. He cautioned, “This is a very risky strategy.” Murphy warned that while Iran might endure sanctions and military pressure for years, American families would suffer from soaring fuel prices.
He argued that “time is not on our side,” as rising oil prices are already harming American farmers and households.
Senator Patty Murray criticized the substantial increase in the defense budget, accusing the government of prioritizing war spending over domestic needs. Murray stated, “You are spending taxpayer dollars on a war that many oppose. You want to increase the war budget by half a trillion dollars for next year.”
Democratic leaders also questioned whether the government has the legal authority for military action against Iran, asserting that formal Congressional approval is necessary for such a significant conflict.
During the hearing, Secretary Hegseth defended the Trump administration, claiming that it has achieved what previous administrations could not. He asserted that the U.S. now has greater leverage and that this campaign is essential to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
According to Pentagon officials, approximately $29 billion has already been spent on the Iran conflict. Senators warned that if military operations continue for an extended period and U.S. bases in the Middle East suffer further damage, costs could escalate rapidly.
