Demands for Strict Action Against Youths Who Ran Over Medical Student in Telangana

Hyderabad, August 10: The Telangana government is calling for severe punishment for the individual and his friend who ran over a medical student last week in a mall in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana’s Animal Husbandry Minister, Vakiti Srihari, visited Gandhi Hospital on Monday to console the victim’s family.

Priyanka, the medical student, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad. Her body has been sent to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem and will later be taken to Ikhlaspur in Gadwal district for the final rites.

The minister assured the family of all possible assistance. He stated that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao would raise this issue with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and demand strict action against all involved.

Srihari emphasized that taking strong action against the accused would send a stern message to the public and help deter similar incidents in the future.

Priyanka was pursuing her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Rajahmundry Medical College. The tragic incident occurred on the night of August 3 when a youth, driving under the influence, collided with her scooter while she was riding as a passenger.

The 28-year-old was leaving the mall with her friend Umesh when the car struck their scooter. Following the accident, she was admitted to a local hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Hyderabad, where she was declared dead.

Police investigations revealed that the accused hit the scooter with his car and subsequently assaulted mall staff before fleeing the scene.

According to police, mall employees denied entry to the accused, Survarpu Daswanth and Andrew Edwards, due to their intoxication. This led to an altercation, during which the accused attacked the staff. When security attempted to apprehend them, the driver sped away, crashing into Priyanka’s scooter parked near the mall entrance.

After running over the medical student, the accused fled but were later arrested. A case of involuntary manslaughter has been filed against them, and the police may revise the charges following Priyanka’s death.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a financial aid of ₹2 million for the victim’s family on Sunday.

Priyanka’s father, Venkatesh, met with police officials in Rajahmundry, urging them to register a complaint and demanding strict action against the accused to ensure they receive a severe punishment.
