New Delhi, July 20: Delhi’s Power Minister, Ashish Sood, launched two initiatives on Sunday aimed at modernizing the electricity infrastructure and promoting clean energy in East Delhi.
He inaugurated a state-of-the-art smart pad-mounted substation in Gandhi Nagar and kicked off the ‘Solarize East’ campaign. This initiative aims to connect more citizens to rooftop solar systems under the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme.’
The event was attended by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, along with legislators, councilors, representatives from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), housing society members, senior officials from BYPL, and numerous dignitaries.
During the occasion, Sood stated that the Delhi government is implementing a long-term strategy focused on the future of the electricity sector. He revealed that in just one year, a capital expenditure of ₹1,427 crores has been invested in the electricity sector. This investment aims not only to meet current needs but also to lay a strong foundation for Delhi’s growing energy demand in the future.
He explained that this investment will be used to strengthen the transmission and distribution network, construct new substations, modernize old electricity infrastructure, and accelerate the adoption of smart technology.
The Power Minister noted that Delhi recorded its highest peak power demand of 8,748 megawatts this year. Despite this high demand, the city did not face significant power cuts.
He emphasized that this reflects the Delhi government’s planning, the capacity of electricity distribution companies, the dedication of engineers, and the robustness of the capital’s electricity infrastructure.
Sood asserted that a reliable power system is the strongest foundation of any modern city. Industries, businesses, educational institutions, healthcare services, digital services, and the daily lives of citizens all depend on uninterrupted and high-quality electricity supply. Therefore, the Delhi government is continuously working to make the electricity sector more modern, smart, green, and future-ready.
He concluded by stating that the goal is not just to provide electricity but to deliver reliable, affordable, smart, and now green power.
