New Delhi, April 4: Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presented an ambitious strategy on Friday to combat air pollution in the capital. She announced plans to reduce traffic congestion at 62 identified hotspots through timely interventions.
The launch of the Air Pollution Mitigation Action Plan 2026 is based on the government’s historic green budget for 2026-27. The initiative aims to translate clean air goals into measurable outcomes.
Gupta emphasized that efforts are underway to alleviate traffic jams at these hotspots. An intelligent traffic management system is being implemented across the city, along with smart parking solutions and pricing improvements to enhance road usage and reduce emissions.
This plan, developed under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizes accountability, technology, and timely execution, providing a structured roadmap for sustainable urban development.
On Friday, a high-level review meeting on effective pollution control was held at the Chief Minister’s Service House, chaired by Gupta. Key attendees included Cabinet Ministers Pravesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Pankaj Kumar Singh; Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma; representatives from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and traffic police; along with senior officials from relevant government departments.
Gupta reiterated that clean air and environmental protection are now central to the government’s policy framework. This framework has received specific budgetary allocations for clean mobility, dust control, waste management, greening, and pollution monitoring.
“This is not just a policy announcement; it is an enforcement-driven campaign powered by resources, technology, and strict oversight,” she stated, aiming to ensure clean air for every resident of Delhi.
The action plan targets major pollution sources, including vehicle emissions, road dust, construction activities, industrial discharge, and biomass burning, using a scientific, data-driven approach. Eleven priority sectors have been identified, with clear responsibilities, timelines, and compliance mechanisms established for real-time monitoring.
Taking a firm stance on vehicle emissions, the Chief Minister announced a zero-tolerance policy for violations. The “No PUC, No Fuel” rule will be strictly enforced.
The government is increasing investments in public transport, aiming to boost the number of buses to 13,760 by 2028-29, with a focus on electric buses.
The upcoming EV policy in 2026 will target two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, alongside transitioning government vehicles to cleaner fuels.
Recognizing road dust as a significant pollutant, Gupta announced the deployment of mechanical road sweepers, water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns on a large scale. Mist spray systems are being installed on roads and mandated for large buildings. All operations will be monitored in real-time through GPS tracking and a centralized dashboard.
