Delhi High Court Issues Notice to Police in Ankit Sharma Murder Case

New Delhi, August 18: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police regarding the petition filed by Javed, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma during the Delhi riots. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for December 2.
On July 31, both Javed and former Aam Aadmi Party councilor Tahir Hussain were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Karkardooma Court. The Delhi Police informed the court that Ankit Sharma was brutally murdered during the riots.
Javed’s lawyer stated that the court’s order indicated that the prosecution failed to prove the accused’s role in the incident. Following this, Javed challenged the lower court’s decision in the Delhi High Court.
This case dates back to February 2020, when Ankit Sharma was brutally killed during the riots in Northeast Delhi. His body was recovered from a drain in the Chandbagh area. The post-mortem report revealed that Ankit had over 40 injuries on his body.
After the sentencing on July 31, Tahir Hussain claimed he would appeal the decision in the Delhi High Court, expressing hope for justice. Both convicts have approached the High Court, prompting the court to issue a notice to the Delhi Police.
Ankit Sharma’s family has stated that if the case reaches the Delhi High Court or the Supreme Court, they will continue to fight for justice. They believe this case should be classified as one of the “rarest of rare” cases, deserving the harshest punishment. They expressed a desire for the death penalty for the accused. While they acknowledged that the court has delivered justice, they insisted that Tahir Hussain should have received the death penalty.
On the other hand, Tahir Hussain’s lawyer, Tara Narula, mentioned that they would appeal the court’s decision in the High Court. She noted that the court considered the brutality of Ankit Sharma’s murder but also acknowledged that there was no direct evidence linking any of the convicts to the act of dragging Ankit or using a weapon against him. They are hopeful that their case will be stronger in the High Court.
