New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has granted significant relief to Delhi government ministers Parvesh Verma and Kapil Mishra by dismissing petitions related to alleged inciting speeches. This ruling comes in connection with the 2019 Jamia violence and the 2020 riots in Delhi.
On Monday, the bench comprising Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manoj Jain made the decision to reject the petitions that sought action against these political figures. The petitions called for the filing of FIRs against Verma, Mishra, and others for their purported inflammatory remarks.
Sheikh Mujtaba Farooq had raised concerns regarding speeches made by BJP leaders, including Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Verma, and Abhay Verma. These speeches are alleged to have incited riots in Northeast Delhi, resulting in over 50 fatalities.
Other petitions, including those from CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, sought a court-monitored investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the role of the Delhi police during the riots. Allegations against the police date back to December 2019, during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Jamia Millia Islamia, where students claimed they were subjected to police brutality.
One petitioner also approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), calling for an independent investigation and suggesting that some cases be handed over to an external agency instead of the Delhi police.
In a separate petition filed by ‘Lawyers Voice,’ there is a demand to prosecute several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manish Sisodia, and Asaduddin Owaisi, alongside a retired High Court judge.
