New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government has taken a significant step toward establishing its own Public Works Department (PWD) engineering cadre. This approval comes from the central government, marking a resolution to a demand that has been pending for nearly three decades.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the decision, highlighting that the need for a dedicated PWD engineering cadre in Delhi has been long overdue. With the central government’s approval, the path is now clear for the formation of this independent cadre.
Gupta noted that this development will enable the swift filling of long-vacant positions within the department. It is also expected to enhance the monitoring and execution of projects, thereby accelerating the construction of roads, bridges, and public buildings.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she stated that the central government’s support will empower the capital’s development.
According to a letter from the Ministry of Urban Affairs, the proposal to separate 3,214 approved engineering positions from the central PWD cadre to form an independent Delhi PWD engineering cadre has been agreed upon. This decision was made following the approval of the competent authority.
PWD Minister Pravesh Verma described this decision as historic and also expressed thanks to Prime Minister Modi. He emphasized that this approval fulfills a long-held aspiration for Delhi, enhancing accountability and efficiency in infrastructure construction and maintenance.
Verma assured that under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, the government will ensure that these administrative reforms translate into better roads, stronger bridges, and modern public infrastructure for the residents of Delhi.
