Deadly Explosions in Maiduguri: 23 Killed and Over 100 Injured

Abuja, March 17: In a tragic incident in northeastern Nigeria, three devastating explosions rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening, resulting in at least 23 fatalities and injuring over 108 individuals, according to police reports released on Tuesday.

Initial investigations suggest that the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers who detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at various crowded locations. The targeted sites included the Maiduguri Monday Market, the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover area.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, these explosions occurred shortly after an attack on a military post the previous night. The recent violence, including a bombing at a mosque in December, has instilled fear in the city. For some time, militants had shifted their focus from urban areas to rural regions, leading to a semblance of peace in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have recently intensified their attacks in northeastern Nigeria. Their 16-year campaign to establish control in the region has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced nearly 2 million people.

Military spokesperson Sani Uba stated, “These cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas; the terrorists aimed to inflict significant casualties and spread terror in the metropolis.”

The series of explosions caused chaos in the area. Security forces quickly arrived on the scene and initiated a search operation, cordoning off the region. Officials reported that the situation is now under control, and security measures in the city have been heightened.

No terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet. However, Maiduguri and its surrounding areas are already considered sensitive to militant activities.

As the capital of Borno State, Maiduguri has long been a hotspot for Boko Haram’s operations, which have resulted in numerous suicide attacks and bombings over the past decade, claiming thousands of lives.
