New Delhi, August 4: A healthy body requires regular yoga practice and a balanced diet. Garudasana, or Eagle Pose, is a yoga posture that enhances flexibility and strength. It is particularly beneficial for children’s physical development and overall health.
The name Garudasana is derived from the word ‘Garuda,’ which means ‘eagle.’ In this pose, the practitioner mimics the posture of an eagle, hence the name.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Garudasana is an essential yoga pose that improves balance, concentration, and physical strength. It strengthens the muscles of the arms and legs while also enhancing the strength of the ankles, calves, thighs, and shoulders. This pose alleviates stiffness in the legs and hips, improves balance and concentration, and relieves tension in the shoulders and upper back. Additionally, it stimulates the nerves and enhances the nervous system.
To perform Garudasana, start by standing comfortably in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). Breathe normally as you slightly bend your knees and extend your arms forward. Shift your body’s balance onto your right leg while lifting your left leg upwards. Next, wrap your left leg around your right leg, ensuring your left thigh is over your right thigh. Then, bend both arms at the elbows and cross them, placing your left arm over your right. Try to bring your palms together in a prayer position. Hold this pose as long as possible before slowly returning to the starting position. You can repeat Garudasana for three to five cycles.
This pose may be challenging for beginners, but regular practice offers numerous benefits. However, individuals with recent injuries to the knees, ankles, or shoulders should avoid this pose.
