Bhopal, May 1: In a significant decision following the unfortunate incident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, the Madhya Pradesh government has suspended all cruise operations. Tourism Minister Dharmendra Lodhi stated that the recent accident was deeply regrettable. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has been personally overseeing rescue operations since last night. Alongside Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh and local representatives, he has been present at the site, where an investigation into the incident has been ordered.
Minister Lodhi confirmed that cruise operations will remain suspended until a thorough technical review of safety standards is conducted. The incident occurred on Thursday when a cruise, caught in strong winds on the Narmada River, capsized. A large number of tourists were on board. Rescue teams worked diligently to cut through the wreckage and save passengers. So far, 29 tourists have been rescued, while 9 bodies have been recovered. Chief Minister Yadav has mandated an investigation into the accident.
The government plans to honor those who saved lives during the rescue efforts. In a statement to reporters, Yadav attributed the Bargi Dam incident to a cyclone, emphasizing that further details will emerge from the investigation report.
Yadav expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. He announced that members of the rescue team who assisted in saving lives will be recognized on August 15. Additionally, he directed that families of the deceased receive financial assistance of 400,000 rupees each from the state government.
