New Delhi, March 18: Political reactions have emerged following the arrest of 14 individuals in Varanasi for allegedly throwing non-vegetarian food into the Ganga River during an Iftar party on a boat. This incident has sparked a debate over religious sentiments and law enforcement.
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma stated that the Ganga holds significant sacred importance in Sanatan Dharma and is revered as a mother. He emphasized that everyone should respect its dignity and refrain from actions that contradict religious beliefs. He also noted that the law will take appropriate action as per its regulations.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra questioned the connection of this incident to the Iftar party. He suggested that it could be an attempt to hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community, pointing out that having an Iftar on a boat is a new claim.
On the other hand, Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh expressed that he was not fully informed about the situation. He mentioned that if people were having Iftar, there should be no objection. However, if any rules were violated, appropriate legal action should follow.
A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed individuals enjoying an Iftar on a boat in the middle of the Ganga River, allegedly throwing leftover non-vegetarian food into the water. This act reportedly hurt the religious sentiments of many, as the Ganga is considered extremely sacred, with millions visiting for worship and bathing.
The video circulated widely on platforms like Instagram, depicting people eating biryani and other dishes on a small boat during sunset. Following a complaint from a leader of the BJP’s youth wing, the local police registered a case against those involved and the boat operator. Charges include hurting religious sentiments, creating public nuisance, and spreading filth.
So far, 14 individuals have been detained. The police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are verifying the video’s authenticity while attempting to identify other individuals seen in the footage.
