Kolkata, June 12: A document featuring the signatures of 19 Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has surfaced, claiming to represent the main and majority faction of the party in the Lok Sabha.
Questions have emerged regarding whether these three pages are part of a letter submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office by MPs led by Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Shatabdi Roy.
The first signature on the document belongs to Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a four-time MP from the Barasat constituency in North 24 Parganas. The second signature is from Shatabdi Roy, an actress-turned-politician and a four-time MP from the Birbhum constituency.
However, the authenticity of the signatures on these three pages has not been confirmed.
The remaining 17 signatures include those of Bapi Halder from Mathurapur, Sharmila Sarkar from Bardhaman East, Prasun Banerjee from Howrah, Jagdish Verma Basunia from Cooch Behar, Asit Mal from Bolpur, Arup Chakraborty from Bankura, Kalipada Soren from Jhargram, Deepak Adhikari from Ghatal, Jun Maliya from Medinipur, Partha Bhumik from Barrackpore, Khalilur Rahman, Abu Taher Khan from Jangipur, Yusuf Pathan from Baharampur, Mithali Bag from Arambagh, Mala Roy from Kolkata (South), Rachana Banerjee from Hooghly, and Sayoni Ghosh from Jadavpur.
Interestingly, Rachana Banerjee and Sayoni Ghosh’s signatures appear at different locations but are not in sequential order. Despite the lack of comments from any of the 19 dissenting MPs, sources close to the rebels indicated that Rachana and Sayoni signed the letter later, which is why their signatures were placed separately.
The Lok Sabha Speaker’s office has not issued any official confirmation regarding this letter.
Currently, the TMC has 27 MPs in the Lok Sabha. The seat for the TMC MP Haji Sheikh Noorul Islam from the Bashirhat constituency in North 24 Parganas has been vacant since his passing in September 2024, shortly after his election.
