Coimbatore Leads Tamil Nadu in GPS Installation for Mineral Transport Trucks

Coimbatore has installed GPS devices in 4,200 mineral transport trucks ahead of the states deadline, enhancing monitoring and enforcement.

Coimbatore, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Coimbatore has emerged as a leader in Tamil Nadu for the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in mineral transport trucks. As of now, 4,200 vehicles have been equipped with these devices, well ahead of the state government’s deadline of October 31.

Approximately 7,000 trucks are engaged in transporting minerals in Coimbatore. Of these, 60% have already been fitted with GPS. Officials are intensifying efforts to ensure compliance among the remaining trucks before the deadline.

This initiative is particularly significant as Coimbatore shares a border with Kerala, a route for transporting mineral resources into the neighboring state. There are 13 check posts along the Coimbatore-Kerala border where officials are actively working to prevent illegal movement of minerals.

The Department of Mineral Resources, the Revenue Department, and the police are jointly enforcing measures against unauthorized transport. Mandating GPS installation is part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen monitoring of vehicles involved in mineral transportation.

According to government directives, all trucks transporting minerals in Tamil Nadu must have GPS devices installed by October 31. Officials have warned that action will be taken against those who fail to meet this requirement by the deadline.

Coimbatore’s progress has positioned it ahead of other districts in the number of mineral transport vehicles equipped with tracking devices. Reports indicate that while some districts have as many as 12,000 trucks involved in mineral transport, only about 2,000 of those have GPS devices installed.

A government official stated that discussions have been held with truck owners to expedite the installation process and ensure compliance with government orders. “Truck owners have been instructed to speed up the installation process. So far, 4,200 vehicles have been fitted with GPS devices,” the official noted. Steps are being taken to complete installations for the remaining vehicles by the end of the month.

With a significant fleet of vehicles for mineral transport and several check posts, Coimbatore has become a key district in the enforcement campaign. Officials are coordinating actions with responsible departments to combat illegal mineral transport across the border while also focusing on the installation of GPS devices in vehicles.
