Beijing, March 4: On March 2, during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, China’s permanent representative to the UN office in Geneva, Chia Koid, urged all parties to pursue joint reforms and advancements in global human rights governance.
He highlighted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Human Rights Council’s establishment and the 40th anniversary of the declaration on the right to development. However, he noted the rising trends of unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemony, which pose challenges to multilateralism and the international human rights movement. The current situation in the Middle East is particularly concerning.
At this time, it is crucial to uphold a multilateral system centered around the United Nations, promote peace and security, and balance the three pillars of development, human rights, and security. Efforts to improve and enhance global human rights governance must continue.
Chia emphasized China’s commitment to maintaining the implications of human rights inherent in global governance initiatives. He called on all parties to safeguard human rights through security and to create a peaceful environment for achieving human rights. He also advocated for a people-centered approach, promoting the balanced development of all types of human rights, fostering equality, and abandoning political confrontations.
This year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, coinciding with the opening of the two sessions of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People’s Congress (NPC). China will continue to develop a whole-process democracy to ensure that the benefits of modernization in the Chinese style reach all people. China looks forward to working with all countries to promote the healthy development of international human rights and to jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity.
