Bhopal, May 10: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will release two female cheetahs from the quarantine enclosure at Kuno National Park into the wild near the Kuno River on May 11. He will also tour the Kuno National Park during this event.
This initiative to release the cheetahs will give a fresh impetus to the ‘Project Cheetah’ and add a significant chapter to India’s wildlife conservation history.
Nine cheetahs brought from Botswana have successfully completed their quarantine period. They were subsequently housed in smaller enclosures to adapt to the local conditions. Now, preparations are complete for the release of these two cheetahs into the open forest.
The objective of Project Cheetah is to reintroduce the cheetah species, which has become extinct in the region, increase their population, and prepare them for independent hunting and roaming.
In late February 2026, nine new cheetahs, including six females and three males, were brought to Kuno National Park from Botswana. With their arrival, the total number of cheetahs in India, including cubs born in the country, has risen to 57. This marks the third major international phase of Project Cheetah. Previously, eight cheetahs were brought from Namibia on September 17, 2022, and twelve cheetahs arrived from South Africa in 2023. The cheetahs from Botswana were transported to Gwalior via a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force and then taken to Kuno National Park by helicopter.
Wildlife experts believe that the cheetahs from Botswana bring greater genetic diversity, which will help develop a healthy and sustainable population in Kuno. Experts also anticipate that these cheetahs will quickly acclimatize to the Kuno environment. After completing their quarantine and adaptation process, plans are underway to relocate them to other sanctuaries, such as Gandhi Sagar and Naoradehi. Kuno National Park is emerging as a crucial center for wildlife conservation and ecological restoration in the country.
