Howrah, March 10: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is on a tour of West Bengal to review preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. On Tuesday, he visited Belur Math, where he reaffirmed the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting elections without any pressure or violence.
Speaking to reporters, he emphasized that the Election Commission aims to reassure all voters in West Bengal of its dedication to a peaceful electoral process. The visit to Belur Math, the sacred site of revered figures like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda, was intended to reinforce this message.
Prior to this, on March 9, Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, conducted a comprehensive review of the election preparations.
During this review, the Commission engaged with representatives from recognized national political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party (Marxist), Indian National Congress, and National People’s Party, as well as state parties like the All India Forward Bloc and All India Trinamool Congress. They sought suggestions from these parties regarding the electoral process.
Most political parties expressed appreciation for the extensive Security and Intelligence Review (SIR) being conducted by the Election Commission and voiced their full confidence in its capabilities. They urged the Commission to take stringent measures to prevent any form of aggression or intimidation towards voters during the upcoming elections.
The parties also called for the deployment of a significant number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure the safety of each voter and to curb any potential violence. Concerns were raised about the possibility of certain factions resorting to crude bombs, illegal weapons, money, and muscle power.
