The Chhattisgarh High Court has issued an interim order suspending new appointments for 6,000 constable vacancies amid allegations of irregularities in the ongoing recruitment process. The decision came following petitions filed raising concerns over the written and physical efficiency tests conducted by the Police Department across the state.
As per the court’s directive, the Police Department is barred from issuing any joining letters until further notice. The state government has been given two weeks to respond to the matter, with the next hearing scheduled for 23 February.
The recruitment process involved written exams and physical efficiency tests held in various districts to fill the vacant constable posts. Petitioners, through their counsel Advocate Mateen Siddiqui, argued that there were significant manipulations during the physical efficiency tests. A key piece of evidence cited was a letter dated 19 December 2024 from the Bilaspur SSP and Selection Committee chairman to the Police Headquarters in Raipur, which officially reported discrepancies observed during the physical tests.
The petitioners also highlighted that the recruitment process was conducted under a single centralised advertisement for the entire state, and the same outsourcing company handled physical tests across all districts. This raised suspicions that irregularities similar to those in Bilaspur might have occurred in other centres as well.
It was informed during the hearing that out of the 6,000 posts, appointment letters have already been issued to approximately 2,500 candidates. The petitioners expressed concern that continuing with further appointments could compromise the ongoing investigation and hinder fair action later.
Representing the government, the counsel rejected the allegations, stating that the complaint was limited to one centre and should not be generalized to the entire state’s recruitment process.
After hearing all parties, the High Court acknowledged the seriousness of the alleged irregularities and ordered a halt on any new appointment orders until the next hearing or final decision. The attention now shifts to the proceedings on 23 February, which will determine the future course of the recruitment.
