Chandranath Rath: The Shadow of Suvendu Adhikari, Who Dreamed of a Spiritual Life

Kolkata, May 7: Chandranath Rath, a trusted aide of West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has been tragically murdered. Family members reveal that he had a spiritual inclination since his student days and once aspired to become a monk.

Chandranath Rath, 42, was a former Indian Air Force personnel from East Midnapore, which is also Suvendu Adhikari’s home district. The Rath family has been closely associated with the Adhikari family for many years. When Suvendu was part of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Rath family stood by him. Later, in the lead-up to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Suvendu joined the BJP.

After serving in the Indian Air Force for nearly 18 years, Rath began working full-time as Suvendu Adhikari’s aide and personal assistant in 2019. At that time, Adhikari was a minister in the TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee.

Even after Suvendu joined the BJP before the 2021 Assembly elections, Chandranath remained by his side like a shadow. Following Suvendu’s victory over Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency in 2021, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and appointed Rath as his personal assistant.

Over the past seven years, Rath became an integral part of Suvendu Adhikari’s political life, managing everything from scheduling his busy agenda to handling files, preparing for meetings, and managing phone calls.

As discussions circulated among the media and close associates of Adhikari regarding the upcoming Assembly elections, it was speculated that if the BJP formed a government in West Bengal and Suvendu became Chief Minister, Chandranath Rath would undoubtedly be appointed as the Chief Minister’s executive assistant.

The BJP has achieved significant victories in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari not only defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipur Assembly seat in South Kolkata but also secured his traditional Nandigram seat.
