New Delhi, August 8: The United States has long claimed that the coronavirus, which has claimed millions of lives worldwide, was created in a Chinese lab. Investigations are ongoing to substantiate this claim. However, a new report indicates that due to China’s lack of cooperation, it has become exceedingly difficult for the U.S. to determine whether the virus originated from the Wuhan lab.
The report also highlights that it is largely within the U.S.’s control to ascertain whether American agencies funded or collaborated on that research.
In an article for National Review, Jianli Yang argues that it is time to stop allowing the Chinese Communist Party to invoke the “Fifth Amendment” as a defense. The article states that the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was designed to protect citizens from self-incrimination, but Beijing has turned it into a principle of its governance.
According to the author, the U.S. should lead an international political and scientific campaign to pressure China for genuine cooperation.
The article claims that since the onset of the COVID pandemic, the Chinese government has violated the spirit and obligations of international public health cooperation. Authorities suppressed doctors who warned about the pandemic, silenced journalists, imposed censorship on scientists, restricted access to early data, denied independent access to crucial records, removed online databases, and controlled every investigative process.
The report indicates that every serious attempt to trace the origins of the pandemic has faced political obstacles erected by Beijing.
The article further states that if the U.S. Congress genuinely wishes to advance the investigation into the origins of COVID-19, it should conduct a comprehensive and credible inquiry into the relationships between the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, EcoHealth Alliance, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The author suggests that such an investigation would not only clarify America’s accountability but could also reveal critical evidence related to the actual source of the pandemic. The article raises the question of why many countries ultimately accepted these obstacles, despite the clear interference from China.
Yang asserts that “the victims of the greatest pandemic of the past century deserve not just political blame games, but the truth.”
Previously, former U.S. top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly invoked his constitutional right against self-incrimination during Senate hearings. During these sessions, Republican lawmakers raised questions about U.S. funding related to coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origins of COVID-19.
Last month, a heated political debate unfolded during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing. Committee Chairman Rand Paul accused Fauci of playing a role in funding “dangerous gain-of-function research” in Wuhan and later suggested that contempt proceedings could be considered for his refusal to answer questions.
