Celebrations Amplified as Hartalika Teej Coincides with Ganesh Chaturthi

New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The festive spirit of Hartalika Teej was palpable in New Delhi on September 13, 2026, as women celebrated with great enthusiasm. The occasion was further enlivened by its overlap with Ganesh Chaturthi, adding to the vibrancy of the festivities.

Devotees noted that this fast symbolizes the love between Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Women observe the fast without water, praying for the long life and happiness of their husbands. Local markets buzzed with activity, as shopkeepers reported a surge in purchases of traditional attire, bangles, and henna.

A woman from Varanasi expressed her joy, stating, “Teej is a symbol of the love between Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. According to the legend, Parvati created a clay idol of Shiva, dedicating an entire day to it while fasting. This tradition inspires women to observe the fast without water.”

She also highlighted the auspicious timing of Ganesh Chaturthi, saying, “It’s wonderful that Ganesh worship coincides with Teej. This happens every year, but sometimes, both occasions align perfectly, leading to a festive atmosphere where women dress up and buy new saris.”

Ashish Kumar Garg, a local shop owner, noted that sales were thriving, with many women shopping for henna—a tradition upheld in his store for the past 18 years.

Sashi Singh emphasized the significance of the fast, stating, “Women fast for their husbands’ longevity. On this day, Lord Shiva is believed to be present on Earth, and women engage in rituals without drinking water. They apply henna, wear bangles, and dress in new saris while observing the fast.”

He added, “Lord Ganesh’s presence makes this day even more auspicious, as he arrives with his family.”

Shalini Rathod from Prayagraj shared her experience, saying, “This fast is observed once a year for our husbands’ long lives, and it brings immense joy to all women. We buy new clothes, anklets, and bridal accessories, making it a challenging yet fulfilling fast that lasts 24 hours.”

She noted that the fast was first observed by Goddess Parvati for Lord Shiva, inspiring women today to partake in the tradition. “While we may not achieve the same level of penance as her, we strive to honor the practice,” she concluded.
