Mumbai, August 31: Cinema serves as a mirror to society, reflecting voices and truths that often remain suppressed. The film ‘Lajja,’ released in 2001, is a prime example of this. On Monday, the film celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Actor Jackie Shroff marked this occasion by sharing a montage video of clips from the film on his Instagram Stories, writing, “The film Lajja has completed 25 years since its release.”
In ‘Lajja,’ Jackie Shroff played the character Raghu, the husband of the main protagonist Vaidehi, portrayed by Manisha Koirala. Raghu is depicted as a wealthy NRI husband who exhibits abusive behavior and infidelity behind closed doors.
The director not only crafted a compelling story but also assembled an impressive cast, including Manisha Koirala (Vaidehi), Madhuri Dixit (Janaki), Rekha (Ram Dulari), Mahima Chaudhry (Maithili), Ajay Devgn (Raju), Anil Kapoor (Bulla), and Jackie Shroff (Raghu).

The central storyline revolves around Vaidehi, who, after suffering abuse from her husband Raghu in America, escapes to India while pregnant. During her journey in search of freedom, she encounters three other women from diverse backgrounds: Maithili (Mahima Chaudhry), Janaki (Madhuri Dixit), and Ram Dulari (Rekha). All these women are victims of a patriarchal society and domestic violence, yet they choose to fight for their rights instead of succumbing to despair.
