CBI arrests two persons including Deputy Commissioner of IT dept in bribery case

New Delhi, March 23 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two persons including a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax posted in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in an alleged bribery case, CBI said on Wednesday. Both have been identified as Daniel Raj, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax and Kalyan Srinath, Auditor (private person). Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused and another person in Coimbatore which led to recovery of incriminating documents and cash of Rs 5.75 lakh from the premises of Deputy Commissioner, CBI spokesperson said. According to the probe agency, a case was registered on complaint against the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Income Tax and an Auditor (private person). It was alleged that the DC in conspiracy with the Auditor demanded undue advantage of Rs 2.50 lakh from the complainant for settling the Income Tax issues favourably including a matter related to sale of agricultural land by the complainant and the tax liabilities on the capital gain of the said sale of land, CBI said. The Income Tax department had conducted raids at the complainant’s residence in the year 2017, and the matter was pending with the IT department. During February 2022, the DC allegedly contacted the complainant and directed him to visit his office. Accordingly, the complainant and the Auditor met DC and discussed the issue, the investigative agency said. CBI laid a trap and caught the Auditor when he allegedly accepted part payment of Rs 50,000 from the complainant on the directions of a public servant. Later, DC was also caught. Both were produced before the Court in Coimbatore today and remanded to judicial custody till April 6. CM SHK2114
