CBI Arrests Main Accused in Tripura Chit Fund Scam After 13 Years on the Run

Kolkata, May 13: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Sanjit Chakraborty, the main accused in the Tripura chit fund scam, who had been evading capture for 13 years. The arrest took place in Kolkata, as confirmed by the CBI on Wednesday.

The agency revealed that charges had been filed against Chakraborty in two separate chit fund cases in Tripura. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of Cosmic Negotiators Private Limited, based in Kolkata. Chakraborty had been on the run since an FIR was lodged by the Tripura police in 2013.

According to a statement from the CBI, the agency took over the investigation of these cases following notifications from the Tripura and central governments under the DSPE Act of 1946.

The investigation led to the filing of a charge sheet in 2015, accusing Chakraborty and others of defrauding the public of approximately ₹7.48 crore in the first case. In the second case, a charge sheet was filed in 2024 against him and others for defrauding the public of around ₹27.13 lakh. In both instances, Chakraborty was listed as a fugitive in the charge sheets.

Reports indicate that Chakraborty had been living in hiding since 2013. After persistent efforts, he was located in Kolkata based on a tip-off and was arrested by the CBI on May 12.

Following his arrest, Chakraborty will be brought to Tripura after obtaining a transit warrant from the relevant court in Kolkata. Authorities have stated that further investigations are ongoing.

Previously, the CBI had arrested several individuals from various states, including Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, in connection with the Tripura chit fund scam. The scams have significantly impacted the northeastern state, with numerous illegal chit fund companies defrauding thousands of people through various controversial Ponzi schemes. In 2024, the Tripura High Court ordered the formulation of a plan to return money to customers cheated by these chit fund companies.
