Belfast, June 26: Shreyas Iyer, the captain of the Indian T20 team, faced a challenging start to his leadership, suffering a 34-run defeat against Ireland in his debut match. This loss marked Ireland’s first victory against India in this format’s history. Iyer believes that the team gained valuable insights from this experience.
Batting first after losing the toss, Ireland scored 182 runs, losing 9 wickets. In response, the Indian team was bowled out for just 148 runs in 18.5 overs.
Reflecting on the bowling performance and the match slipping away, Iyer stated, “I think our bowlers started well. They got swing and seam movement and took some early wickets. We had a great start, but we failed to execute our plans effectively in the middle overs. We allowed the batsmen to play shots straight down the ground, despite knowing the boundaries were short. However, when we needed to stop runs at the end, the bowlers made a strong comeback. Given our start, a target of 140 runs would have been excellent. Nevertheless, playing here was a great experience. We had the opportunity to play in these conditions and understand the pitch well. As a captain, this was a good start. We must move on from what happened. We learned a lot from this match and will strive to enter the next game with full strength and renewed energy.”
Harshit Rana took 3 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs, while Shivam Dube claimed 1 wicket for 18 runs in 3 overs. Iyer praised both players, saying, “Both certainly performed well. They received assistance with the new ball. Shivam has bowled crucial overs for the team before, so I always trust him. I know his strengths and weaknesses well from our time in domestic cricket. Harshit Rana bowled brilliantly. To perform at this level after returning from injury and showcase his talent is truly commendable.”
Regarding the message to the team after the loss, Iyer said, “I told the players not to take anything lightly. Just stepping onto the field doesn’t guarantee a win. Continuous effort is required, and one must remain fully present in the game at all times. As I mentioned before, focusing on the present is crucial. Whenever we have the chance to apply pressure on the opposing team, we must capitalize fully. No situation or opportunity should ever be taken lightly.”
The Indian team will play the second and final match of the series at the same venue on June 28. Looking ahead to the next match, Iyer expressed, “We are eagerly awaiting the next match and are fully prepared to make a strong comeback.”
