New Delhi, March 18: A significant controversy has emerged in African football. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the result of the 2026 African Cup of Nations final, declaring Morocco the champion. This decision was made on Tuesday.
CAF reversed Senegal’s 1-0 victory from the disputed final held in January, awarding Morocco a 3-0 win instead. The CAF Appeals Committee stated that Senegal’s abandonment of the field violated Articles 82 and 84 of the tournament rules. According to these rules, a team that leaves the match without permission is considered to have lost. Based on this, Morocco was declared the winner with a score of 3-0.
The final, played on January 18 in Rabat, was marred by controversy during stoppage time. Senegal scored a goal, but referee Jean-Jacques Ndala disallowed it due to a foul in Morocco’s box.
Shortly after, Morocco was awarded a penalty when Brahim Diaz was fouled. Upset by this decision, Senegal’s coach Aliou Cissé called his team off the field. After about 20 minutes, the team returned, persuaded by captain Sadio Mané. However, tensions remained high. Diaz failed to convert the penalty, which was saved by Édouard Mendy. Subsequently, Papa Gueye scored in the 94th minute, securing victory for Senegal.
In response to this ruling, the Senegal Football Federation has expressed strong opposition. General Secretary Abdoulaye Sow dismissed the decision as a joke, claiming it lacks any legal basis. Senegal plans to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and will continue to fight until a final decision is reached.
With this ruling, Morocco has claimed its second African Cup of Nations title after 50 years. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation welcomed CAF’s decision, stating it strengthens the rules and integrity of the competition.
CAF also lifted a $100,000 fine imposed on Morocco’s Ismail Sabiri and reduced his suspension from three matches to one. However, fines for some players and officials involved in the VAR process remain intact.
This controversy extends beyond a mere match result, raising questions about the credibility of African football and its regulations. CAS is expected to make a final ruling on the matter.
