Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has made a significant leap in the Indian EV market in 2025. The company has secured a position among the top-5 EV makers in the country, driven by strong sales of its flagship model Sealion 7. The company recorded an impressive 80% sales growth in 2025, which is considered a major achievement in the premium EV segment.
BYD crossed the milestone of 10,000+ cumulative deliveries in September 2025. During the first half of FY2026 (April-September 2025), the company delivered 2,975 units, representing a remarkable 123% year-on-year growth. The Sealion 7 has emerged as the real star during this period. This large electric SUV has generated tremendous demand, propelling the brand to new heights.
In H1 2025, Sealion 7 sales reached 1,232 units. Despite being new in the premium segment, the strong market demand for Sealion 7 has rapidly elevated BYD’s position in the Indian market.
BYD’s India lineup includes various models across different price segments. The Atto 3 starts at ₹24.99 lakh, the eMax 7 at ₹26.90 lakh, the Seal Sedan at ₹41 lakh, and the flagship Sealion 7 at ₹48.90 lakh. This range establishes the company firmly as a premium EV brand, where customers often compare it with BMW, Mercedes, or Hyundai Ioniq.
BYD uses Blade Battery (LFP) technology in its cars, which offers enhanced safety and longer battery life with reduced risk of overheating. This technology provides better range and power performance compared to conventional battery systems.
In the Indian EV market, Tata Motors holds the number-1 position. In the premium category, BYD faces direct competition from BMW, Mercedes, and Hyundai Ioniq. However, BYD’s 80% sales growth in 2025 demonstrates that there is significant space for premium EVs in the Indian market.
The company’s success with the Sealion 7 indicates growing consumer acceptance of Chinese EV brands in India’s premium segment. BYD’s achievement of becoming the 5th largest EV brand reflects the expanding opportunities in India’s evolving electric vehicle landscape.
