New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : During the recent BRICS summit, India made significant strides in its international standing, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A joint statement was issued, prominently condemning the recent attack in Pahalgam. Retired Major General and defense expert P.K. Sehgal emphasized the remarkable achievements India has secured during this summit.
Sehgal discussed the implications of India’s presence alongside Russia and China within the global security architecture. He highlighted the increasing defense collaboration with Russia and the ongoing border tensions with China, which necessitate India’s strategic balance.
“The accomplishments of India are unparalleled and set a precedent,” he stated. “India has demonstrated to the world, especially the West, that it can engage with the U.S., Russia, China, and Iran without compromising its interests.”
He also noted improvements in India’s security landscape. The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Furthermore, India is seeking to redefine its relationship with Russia, moving beyond traditional buyer-seller dynamics. The focus is now on “Make in India” initiatives and joint production efforts. For instance, Russia’s offer to provide the SU-57 fighter jet includes a demand for source codes to enable India to integrate its radar and sensors.
Sehgal outlined India’s defense aspirations from Russia, which include three key requests. First, upgrading the SU-30 fighter jets, which would require an investment of $11 billion and ensure their operational capability for the next 20-30 years. Second, the SU-57, which Russia labels a fifth-generation fighter, is being offered with technology transfer, although the extent of this transfer remains uncertain. Lastly, India seeks long-range missiles capable of covering distances of up to 350 kilometers.
The defense expert also pointed out the significance of the summit’s stance on terrorism. He remarked, “This is a major achievement, especially with China present in BRICS, a nation that often aligns with Pakistan. The condemnation of the Pahalgam violence, without naming any specific country, was a clear signal. It was made evident that all forms of terrorism should be criticized, regardless of their source or underlying reasons, and action must be taken against terrorists.”
