Bommai rules out using force to address aazaan row

Bengaluru, April 5 : Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday ruled out using force to address the “blaring of loudspeakers from mosques at odd hours”, but stressed on solving the issue by taking everyone into confidence. “There are several orders given by the courts in the past against loudspeaker use in mosques. The courts have questioned us (the government) why their orders have not been implemented. “We are at it phase-wise, It is a work that needs taking everybody into confidence. There is no question of force (to address the blaring of loudspeakers from mosques),” he told reporters here. “Ample work is going on at the ground level to solve this problem,” Bommai said, adding, “You (media) do not know what kind of work is going on at the ground level. “We have conducted several meetings with several organisations, from police station level to district levels. We will continue to hold such meetings and take appropriate steps to solve the issue.” The problem cannot be solved by giving clarion calls, Bommai said. “This is neither a new issue, nor the government has passed fresh orders to address this problem,” he said. “This issue has been addressed by the courts. They have also passed orders. The government will take steps to maintain peace,” he added. The court has clearly laid down the criteria of playing loudspeakers from mosques, Bommai said. “The courts have fixed decibel levels of loudspeakers. They have also ordered to buy decibel meters … so on and so forth,” he said. The chief minister was responding to queries on Sri Ram Sene and other Hindu organisations calling for removal of loudspeakers from mosques. Toeing the line of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, these organisations have threatened to play bhajans and “Omkara” nadas at 5 am in protest against loudspeakers blaring from mosques. Thackeray on Saturday had demanded the taking down of loudspeakers from mosques. He had threatened to play Hanuman Chalisa at higher volume outside mosques. BDN ING
