Bollywoods Silence on Social Issues Sparks Debate at Mumbai Event

Sanjay Sharma questions Bollywoods silence on social issues during a discussion with Manoj Bajpayee, highlighting censorship and creative freedom.

Mumbai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : In a thought-provoking discussion at the Mukti Auditorium in Andheri West, Mumbai, editor Sanjay Sharma raised critical questions about Bollywood’s silence on pressing social issues. The event, part of the Tehzeeb platform, featured actor Manoj Bajpayee, who engaged with Sharma’s inquiries about the apparent disconnect between cinematic heroes and real-life activism.

Sharma’s pointed questions challenged the glitzy facade of star culture, asking why prominent figures in the industry often remain mute when the public takes to the streets for justice. Bajpayee responded directly, questioning the validity of labeling those who stay silent on public issues as stars.

The conversation quickly escalated into a broader debate about what constitutes stardom. Is it merely about glamorous appearances and social media presence, or does it also include the courage to speak out against injustice? Sharma highlighted Amitabh Bachchan’s social media activity while questioning his silence on significant issues. Instead of targeting individual actors, Bajpayee reflected on the collective responsibility of the film community.

The dialogue took a more serious turn when Sharma discussed the censorship of his film “Sahiya,” which the Central Board of Film Certification has refused to certify, citing allegations of promoting naxalism and tribal exploitation. Bajpayee expressed his strong support for Sharma’s fight for creative freedom, affirming that filmmakers should have the liberty to express their narratives without fear of censorship.

Sharma also posed a question about the extent of freedom filmmakers should have in expressing their views. Bajpayee emphasized the importance of dissent in a democracy, asserting that every individual should have the right to voice their opinions. He acknowledged the necessity of accommodating diverse viewpoints within society.

The event was notable for its interactive format, allowing audience members to pose questions directly to Bajpayee. Attendees engaged in discussions about acting, cinema, Bollywood, politics, and personal experiences, which Bajpayee addressed with ease.

Overall, the event not only spotlighted the challenges faced by filmmakers like Sharma but also ignited a crucial conversation about the role of Bollywood in addressing social justice issues.
