Yemen Boat Tragedy

Sana, August 4 (H.S.) – A tragic maritime accident occurred off the coast of Yemen’s southern Abyan province on Sunday when a boat carrying approximately 157 people capsized due to rough weather. As of now, rescue divers have recovered 75 bodies, while search efforts for the missing are still underway.

Yemen Boat Tragedy

Initially, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) chief in Yemen reported at least 68 fatalities, with 12 survivors rescued and dozens still missing. Most of the victims are believed to be Ethiopian nationals, part of a large group of migrants who use Yemen as a transit route to reach Gulf countries in search of employment.

According to updated statements by Yemeni security officials on Monday, at least 76 people have been confirmed dead, and 32 survivors have been pulled from the waters near the Gulf of Aden. Rescue teams have launched a large-scale search operation along the coastline, where multiple bodies have been found.

IOM Yemen Chief Abdusattor Esoev stated that the boat was navigating a notoriously dangerous migration route, frequently exploited by human traffickers. He emphasized the urgent need to strengthen legal protections for migrants to prevent exploitation and tragedies like this one.

Earlier this year, in March, two boats carrying over 180 migrants sank off the coast of Yemen’s Dhubab district. Only two crew members were rescued from those vessels, highlighting the deadly risks associated with irregular migration routes in the region.
