New Delhi, March 13: German luxury automaker BMW has announced that its latest electric sedan, the Neue Klasse i3, has commenced winter testing at its training center in Arjeplog, Sweden. The design debut is scheduled for March 18.
The BMW i3 showcases the sporty characteristics typical of the brand, redefined within a new vehicle concept that embodies the DNA of the BMW 3 Series. “We are pushing the conventional boundaries of electric mobility into new territory, thanks to the potential of our Neue Klasse,” stated Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse at BMW.
Central to the i3’s driving dynamics is the innovative ‘Heart of Joy’ control unit, which is one of four advanced systems in the Neue Klasse architecture. This unit, combined with BMW’s proprietary Dynamic Performance Control software, manages the powertrain, brakes, steering, and recuperation, achieving response times ten times faster than previous models.
The winter testing in Sweden is a longstanding tradition for BMW. The snow-covered roads and frozen lakes around Arjeplog provide an ideal environment for evaluating and fine-tuning the vehicle’s drive, suspension systems, and electronic controls. The low friction coefficients of these surfaces allow engineers to test and optimize system interactions under controlled conditions.
Despite the challenging conditions, the ‘Heart of Joy’ ensures agile propulsion. The rapid control of the two electric motors enhances driving stability, enabling the BMW i3 to deliver a responsive and comfortable driving experience, characteristic of the BMW 3 Series.
Additionally, the new soft-stop function allows for the smoothest stopping process in the history of the BMW 3 Series. The stability provided by the Heart of Joy, even on slippery surfaces, also boosts efficiency.
Production of the BMW Neue Klasse i3 is set to begin in the second half of 2026. The vehicle will feature a peak charging capacity of up to 400 kW, with a power output of 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque.
