New Delhi, April 25: The first phase of voting for the 294 assembly seats in West Bengal has concluded, with a voter turnout exceeding 92%. The BJP claims this high turnout indicates strong support for them, asserting that the next government will be theirs. In response, Congress MP Imran Masood challenged the BJP’s assertions.
In an interview in New Delhi, Masood emphasized that a rise in voter turnout does not necessarily translate to votes for the BJP. “The BJP is set to face a major setback,” he stated. He also expressed concerns about the integrity of electronic voting machines, suggesting that if they are tampered with, there is little recourse available.
Addressing comments made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding India as a “world guru,” Masood referenced Murli Manohar Joshi’s contradictory statements, questioning how the BJP can claim such a status when they fail to satisfy their own ideological supporters.
On the topic of the Ram Temple, he remarked that the BJP’s role is minimal, as the Supreme Court’s order was the driving force behind its construction.
Commenting on U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gore’s statements about India, Masood expressed confusion over the conflicting narratives between Gore and former President Trump, labeling Trump’s remarks as deeply offensive and intolerable.
He criticized the government’s claims of a “developed India,” stating, “We haven’t even begun to achieve the ‘D’ in developed.”
Regarding the notice served by 73 Rajya Sabha members against the Chief Election Commissioner, Masood noted that public outrage over the Election Commission’s actions is understandable. He asserted that the opposition is fulfilling its responsibilities, adding, “What do you expect people to do when they are denied their voting rights?”
